The motorcycle hit the rear of the trailer and the driver was killed immediately, Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Kevin Zelk said.
“We believe he was wearing a helmet, but based upon the speed we believe he was going, there were so many other injuries, he was killed instantly,” Zelk said. “The maneuver known as lane splitting is illegal in the state of Illinois, and certainly the area of Route 41 north of Westleigh, where there is an S-curve and the speed limit drops.“So carrying that amount of speed is not advisable, as we have seen fatal accidents in the past,” he said.
The Lake County coroner’s office had yet to release the victim’s name Monday pending notification of next of kin, but authorities said he was a Lake County man in his 40s. No charges have been filed, and the driver of semi was not issued any citations immediately after the crash, Zelk said. He did not rule out charges being filed in the future, pending further investigation.
Route 41 was closed in both directions for almost six hours after the accident, from Old Elm Road to Route 60, Zelk said. Westleigh was also shut down, between Ridge and Buena Roads.
