Labour's Stephen Yemm claimed 16,048 votes in victory over Conservative party candidate Ben Bradley
Mansfield 's victorious new MP has shunned his first opportunity to set his stall out after his big win - shying away from speaking to the press. Labour's Stephen Yemm claimed 16,048 votes in victory over Conservative party candidate Ben Bradley, who garnered 12,563 votes.
When the result was announced at around 4.30am on Friday, July 5, Mr Yemm thanked Mr Bradley, who had been MP in the area since 2017. The Parliament-bound candidate said the politician, who remains Nottinghamshire County Council leader, deserved praise for the "contributions that he has made to Mansfield”.
Mr Yemm added: “I would like to thank the voters of Mansfield and Warsop, who have put their trust in me today and I promise everyone that I will work tirelessly in your interests - to be a voice and a representative for our entire community.” However, after welcoming his 4000-strong majority, Mr Yemm refused to speak to Nottinghamshire Live, Notts TV, and the BBC. When asked if he wanted to speak about his ambitions and celebrate the work behind the victory, his campaign agent bluntly denied access to the candidate.
The contest had largely been seen as a two-horse race despite the presence of seven other candidates. Reform UK's Matt Warnes secured 9,385 votes, coming in third place and causing significant damage to the Tories.
