MSP Mark Griffin is backing the campaign to keep University Hospital Wishaw's neonatal intensive care unit.
Little Rosa Griffin is alive today because of the care given to her by an award-winning neonatal intensive care unit.
The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories, and allows you to customise your page to the sections that matter most to you.Rosa was born in Wishaw on April 1, 2017, at 27 weeks weighing just 535 grams. He said: “She came home from the hospital almost five months later with the vast majority of those five months spent in the neonatal intensive care unit.
“What the government is proposing is that Lanarkshire parents of the sickest babies, the ones who need the most support will be left to make a journey they know isn’t in the best interests of their baby or leave them with a skeleton staff who don’t have the award-winning knowledge, experience or capacity which exists right now.”He explained: “She was haemorrhaging and had to be rushed to emergency surgery. She spent over a week in recovery.
Griffin also pointed out that Rosa wasn’t their only child, with her older sister Eva just a year old. “How does a mum get their kids to nursery or school in Lanarkshire and then get to Aberdeen to care for their sick baby? I’ve told my family’s story but it is far from unique. There are Rosas being born in Wishaw every other week. I’ve met them.”
But Griffin said: “If she had been moved to another site there is no chance she could have survived it.
