The city of Galveston cracked down on monkey business in July.
Lilly, a capuchin monkey, is looks out of a kennel as she is transported to Moody Gardens in Galveston. Lilly was seized by the Galveston Police Department after officials said her owner failed to follow an order to find a home for the animal after she escaped and ran wild in 2020.
Since 2007, Galveston’s municipal code has prohibited islanders from keeping a wide range of exotic and wild animals within the city limits. Monkeys aren’t allowed. Neither are chimpanzees, lions, weasels, raccoons, bears or about 40 others species. Henderson said the rules were in place to held protect local wildlife, to keep dangerous animals from being kept on the island and to prevent exotic animal-borne diseases from spreading locally.
“We already attempted to solve the situation with a simple citation,” Henderson said. “She effectively had two-and-half years to comply with that and the monkey is still on island.” The couple not only were told they couldn’t receive a permit, but weren’t supposed to have the animals at all. They were cited for owning prohibited animal and were given 30 days to find new homes for the animals, Henderson said. The spider monkey was transferred to a sanctuary in Tennessee, but the couple is still working to find a place for their capuchin.
