Coleen Campbell formed alliance with ex-husband's rival before former spouse was subjected to 'extraordinary act of barbarism', jury told

A mum formed an alliance with a rival of her ex-husband before her former spouse was subjected to an 'extraordinary act of barbarism', a murder trial was told. Prosecutors allege Coleen Campbell provided important information about her former husband of 10 years' movements before he was killed in his own home.

The trial at Bolton Crown Court has heard that three men lay in wait in a van outside Mr Campbell's home after 11pm, before he was ambushed when he unlocked his front door. Prosecutors allege that Mr Belfield, Mr Steven and a third unknown man were there. He told jurors: "The prosecution does not set out to make you sure that Coleen Campbell wanted Thomas Campbell dead, only that she intended him really serious harm. And it may well be the case that after his death she has regretted her part in all of this.

Giving evidence earlier in the trial, Ms Campbell told the jury that she never intended any harm to come to her former spouse, who she shared two children with, but that she was helping Mr Belfield to find out if his ex-girlfriend was in a relationship with Mr Campbell. Ms Campbell and Mr Belfield had shared 35 phone calls and 68 messages in the days before Mr Campbell was found dead.

"She pitted herself against him in alliance with John Belfield and his organised crime group." Earlier on Thursday, the judge, Mr Justice Julian Goose, delivered legal directions to the jury.
