Murjoni Merriweather
is one of many addressing this grave imbalance. Her art, crafted from colorful braids, adorned with massive hoop earrings, and sometimes flourished with gold teeth, is the ultimate celebration of Black beauty. Merriweather's work has built her a social media following about 43,000 strong on Instagram, where she goes by. But before she became Instafamous , Merriweather tells me on a Zoom call, she was just an art-loving second-grader doodling in her sketchbooks during class. An eighth-grade ceramics class got her interested in working with clay, though she wasn't necessarily feeling it at first. "I told my teacher, 'I don't like the [pottery] wheel.
Merriweather is intentional about how she makes each piece, from the actual sculpting to the naming process. Each bust is given a name that is written in all caps with a space between each letter. "I want people to actually sit with the name, take time with it, understand it, and respect it," she shares.
