Gov. Phil Murphy formally announced his choice to be the top law enforcement official in New Jersey.

on Thursday turned to one of his closest — and longest-serving — confidants, former chief counsel Matt Platkin — to become New Jersey’s 62nd attorney general. Murphy formally announced he will nominate the 35-year-old Platkin to become the state’s highest law enforcement position.since Gurbil Grewal resigned last July“We will not shy from tough fights when they are the right fights,” Platkin said during a news conference at the Trenton War Memorial.

Born in Livingston, raised in Florham Park and Morristown, Platkin has been a key member of Murphy’s inner circle for years. A graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School, he was an early aide to the former Wall Street executive and U.S. diplomat before Murphy even launched a gubernatorial bid and was then a top advisor to Murphy’s 2017 campaign.

Platkin referred to the job as “the honor of my life.” He called himself a “product of New Jersey” and said he has worked in both public office and private practice to “strengthen our laws.”
