Today Gov. Murphy gave his fifth State of the State address, where he promised to give residents relief from high property taxes, assist Jersey Shore businesses, fight opioid addiction, reform liquor license laws and build the “next New Jersey.”
“This is money going right back into the pockets of roughly two million New Jersey middle-class and working homeowners, seniors, and tenants — households in which well more than half of all of our residents live,” Murphy said.
“Our boardwalks are more than just places for recreation and exercise,” Murphy said. “They are more than just the space that connects a parking area to the beach. They are wooden Main Streets which, in so many ways, define their communities and support their economies as much as the sand and surf.”OPIOID DEATHS COULD BE DECLININGMore than 3,000 people in the state died from overdoses in three of four years between 2018 through 2021, he said.
But he acknowledged, without giving more specifics, “Naloxone alone is not going to end the opioid epidemic.”Murphy announced plans to overhaul New Jersey’s prohibition-era liquor laws – regulations that have long been the focus of reform efforts in the state – and asked lawmakers to partner with his administration “in rewriting our liquor license laws to make them not just modern, but fair.”
“The old rules have purposely created market scarcity and driven up costs to the point where a liquor license can draw seven figures,” Murphy said.
