Murphy does not know how much the probe will cost, and some Republicans are calling for a separate legislative investigation.
“We’re gonna take whatever comes at us,” Murphy told reporters after an unrelated event in Titusville. “We’re gonna be transparent, compliant, completely cooperative — period, full stop.”

Add your email below and hit"subscribe"Murphy announced Monday the state has hired a law firm, Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads, and Boston Consulting Group, a Massachusetts management consulting firm, to conduct the review. It will be led by Paul Zoubek, a former assistant state attorney general under a pair of Republican former governors.
He said Zoubek, the project leader, is “widely respected on both sides of the aisle” and that a goal is to “make sure there’s no partisan nature here.” Asked if he had estimates for a cost for the review, Murphy said similar state investigations in the past have reimbursed firms for their work at the end of the inquiries.in 2014 — which cleared Christie of wrongdoing — cost taxpayers $1 million.
The governor’s office said a final report from this new review is expected in late 2023. That means it could come after New Jersey’s legislative elections next year, when all 120 seats in the Democratic-controlled Legislature will be up for grabs.
