The acquisition marks an important series of tests for the Tesla chief executive who crowned himself 'Chief Twit' this month
Elon Musk’s $44bn takeover of TwitterMusk’s takeover, confirmed late on Thursday, marks the beginning of a new era for the microblogging site, once a Silicon Valley curiosity, now a crucial political staging ground.
It also marks an important series of tests for Musk, who crowned himself “Chief Twit” this month. The Tesla chief executive is a novice in the social media world. In a week where giants like Meta, Alphabet, Snap and Amazon have all, Twitter’s investors will be looking for reassurance that the billionaire knows what he doing.
Musk, an engineer by trade, has elevated himself into the role of a crucial political gatekeeper, and there are widespread concerns that operating it as a blunt instrument will do more harm than good. For regular users, it is unclear what changes will be made to the platform.. That commitment is expected to result in some of Twitter’s most controversial posters being reinstated. Former US president Donald Trump is one such figure, after he was removed in January 2021.
Musk has already said he would reverse that ban, dubbing Twitter as “left-biased”. On Thursday he reportedly sacked the executive responsible for that decision. On Friday, Trump himself said that Twitter “is now in sane hands”, and that he was “very happy” to see Musk in control.
