Dear Pay Dirt: I realized he thought I made much closer to what he makes, which is about three times what I make.
I need some help with a cost-benefit analysis of paying off my full credit card balance versus keeping my emergency fund. A few months ago, I finally hit my goal of an emergency fund with eight months of bills. I decided on eight months because I’ve had some really bad luck with employment lately. I have involuntarily had five jobs in the past four years. Two of these jobs were meant to be short-term, but the other three I was laid off from unexpectedly.
I got laid off when the business went under and I had to take a new job at my old pay. My promotion was the only reason I had saved so much and now I’m saving only a fraction of what I used to. I’m not very optimistic about my ability to make much more money in the future. I think at this point I have enough to pay off my credit cards if the companies will settle and I’m wondering if that’s a bad idea.
