If you’ve ever tried to drink less alcohol, then you know that one of the biggest stumbling blocks is other people. You can learn to surf the urge to drink on your own, but it’s a lot more difficult to deal with the colleague that suggests cocktails or the friend who sees it as an insult if you don’t drink at their party. But what if you live with your sobriety stumbling block?
Nowadays my husband and I have different attitudes towards drinking, but it wasn’t always the case. We met at a party where the drinks were free , and continued drinking through dinner dates and dirty weekends. On moving in together, we always had a well-stocked booze fridge, and dinner wasn’t dinner without a bottle of wine.
Our drinking habits diverged when I got pregnant for the first time. Jonathan didn’t stop drinking out of sober solidarity, as some dads-to-be do, but he did cut back a bit. There followed a period of several years during which I was either pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, or recovering from the birth, or dealing with small children and 5am wake-ups.Now our kids are in school, and capable of entertaining themselves on weekend mornings, I could choose to go back to drinking like I used to.
And, once you start drinking less, it becomes starkly clear how unsexy it is to be drunk. The slurring, the stumbling and – oh God – the morning breath. There comes a point in life when you start to find different things sexy. The shambolic boys I fancied in my twenties now seem tragic. These days, I find it intensely hot when a man can assemble a piece of flatpack furniture, cook a nourishing chickpea curry, and calmly control a party of hyperactive eight-year-olds.
