Might. Maybe. Could. The Browns can’t say for sure who their quarterback will be this weekend. They can’t say when Watson will be back. And the mystery surrounding his expensive shoulder reminds Browns fans of the quarterback woes they’d prefer to forget.
Cleveland has been waiting since 1999 for a quarterback like Watson. The city waited 11 more weeks last season to finally see him play. And it waited another nine games -- until Week 3 against the Titans this season -- to see him play to his potential for the first time. Now Cleveland fans are waiting again, Watson is losing the momentum he built against Tennessee, and we have little insight as to why. The Browns can’t control injuries, but they can control how they manage and discuss them. And on that front, Cleveland didn’t know Watson wasn’t playing against the Ravens until he arrived at the stadium. It still doesn’t know when he’ll play next, and it is floundering for a backup plan behind him.
That’s why, six weeks into a promising season, the Browns’ headquarters already feels chaotic. Maybe Watson will be fine, and maybe the Browns are wise to slow-play his return. But right now, we can’t be sure. And as Cleveland knows well, there is no worse NFL affliction than quarterback uncertainty.
The’ fans have seen this act before, and they’re tired of it. id it. Cleveland waited two decades, then 11 weeks, then nine games, to see it end. But on Wednesday, like two Sundays ago, the Browns’ starting quarterback spot was once again shrouded in drama.
