In the mid 1970s, eateries began shifting to POS systems where customer orders, transactions and more were maintained by computer software — forget barrage of paper slips. The ‘90s brought touchscreens and greater functionality; easily splitting checks followed in the early ‘00s. The 2010s saw restaurant chains started rolling out tablet systems where customers could order and pay themselves.
