Joe Nappi has taken over 600 students to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
Monmouth Regional High School Social Studies teacher Joseph Nappi was named 2023-2024 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2023, during a ceremony at Monmouth Regional High School. Kathy Goldenburg , president of the State Board of Education, and Acting Commissioner of Education Angelica Allen-McMillanm surprised him with the honor.
Katherine Bassett, the state Teacher of the Year in 2000 and now head of the New Jersey Tutoring Corps, welcomed him to the family. Others who have held the title over the years include Bob Goodman, head of the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning, and Jeanne DelColle, who now runs the Center for Future Educators at The College of New Jersey.
As he opened the envelope, Nappi said, “the winner of best picture is…” Instead, it was a letter from the State Board of Education, informing him of his award. Nappi said he was surprised by the honor and wanted to share it with a former guidance counselor at the school, Joe Modoni. Gov. Phil Murphy weighed in, issuing a statement. “Educators like Joe are the heart and soul of our state’s education system, inspiring our youth and shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. “His dedication reflects the values that New Jersey holds dear – a commitment to excellence, empathy, and the pursuit of knowledge.”
