The First Amendment case involving an Orthodox Jewish woman speaking out to obtain a 'get,' or a Jewish contract of divorce, is the first of its kind, her attorney said.
So, the woman made a video in 2021 urging others in the community to press her husband to provide the document and end the marriage. Without the get, which is needed for a marriage’s dissolution in the couple’s religious community, the woman would be socially ostracized, according to court papers.
Her video ended up on social media. Her husband, who said he was terrified for his safety as the video spread, ended up filing a domestic violence complaint against his wife, alleging harassment.
