All police officers and state lawmakers in New Jersey would be required to undergo implicit bias training under a pair of bills approved by the state Assembly on Monday.

The Democratic-controlled Assembly passed the measures with support from a handful of Republicans at the Statehouse in Trenton — though one Republican lawmaker dismissed training for legislators as “the latest fad.” “People may become aware of some implicit bias that they might have, but it doesn’t change any behavior, and they can’t figure out how to make it work because people are hard-wired certain ways,” Webber said on the Assembly floor before voting against both bills. “Why would we subject ourselves to that?”
