Abortion will be a pivotal topic in the 2024 election cycle after the Supreme Court overturned the decades-old Roe decision that extended a broad right to the procedure. The ruling last year in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization opened the door to state-based restrictions on abortion. The 2021 Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs poll showed that 61% of Americans favor keeping abortion legal in “most or all circumstances in the first trimester,” or about 13 weeks of gestation. In the second trimester, 65% said abortion should be illegal in most circumstances. That figure rose to 80% in the third trimester.
