NASA’s Perseverance rover has successfully launched to Mars, beginning a 7-month journey that will see it touch down next year—and search for life like never before, including an ambitious return of samples to Earth
The rover is scheduled to arrive at Mars in early 2021, touching down on the surface on February 18. It will land in a scientifically fascinating region called Jezero Crater, believed to have once played host to an ancient lake and river, and today bearing the remnants of a former river delta.
, Perseverance will look for evidence of life like never before, including microbial microfossils – but it has plenty of other tricks up its sleeve too.Perseverance is the largest and heaviest rover ever sent to Mars. It follows in the footsteps of NASA’s Sojourner rover in 1997, Spirit and Opportunity in 2004, and the Curiosity rover in 2012 – aesthetically a carbon-copy of the Perseverance rover.
For the first time, onboard cameras will be recording this landing process – although the landing itself, which takes about seven minutes and is known as the “seven minutes of terror”, is autonomous. Owing to the time delay from the light travel time between Earth and Mars, mission controllers will only find out after if the landing has been successful or not.
