NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer captured vivid and complex features of this haunting formation located 16,000 light-years from Earth. The genesis of this formation can be traced back to a massive star within our Milky Way Galaxy that exhausted its nuclear fuel some 1,500 years ago. This led to the formation of an exceptionally dense object known as a

The Chandra X-ray Observatory saw the pulsar PSR B1509-58 for the first time in 2001, revealing that its accompanying pulsar wind nebula, named MSH 15-52, exhibits a striking resemblance to a human hand. “The IXPE data gives us the first map of the magnetic field in the ‘hand.’ The charged particles producing the X-rays travel along the magnetic field, determining the basic shape of the nebula, like the bones do in a person’s hand,” said Roger Romani of Stanford University in California, who led the study. In certain areas of MSH 15-52, the high polarization levels indicate a notable absence of turbulence within those regions of the nebula.
