Anthony Elanga was the hero of the afternoon after netting his effort shortly after the break. The win meant Forest jumped into ninth place ahead of Sunday's round of games.
Summer signing Elanga, introduced in first-half added time following an injury to Danilo, struck shortly after the break when he raced on to Taiwo Awoniyi's pass and slotted home. Jackson had earlier been denied by a last-ditch block by Willy Boly, while £40m deadline day signing Cole Palmer was introduced by manager Mauricio Pochettino, as Chelsea chased a response.
Anthony Elanga’s second-half goal for Nottingham Forest was enough to pile more embarrassment on the league’s big spenders, who, for all the signings, still look short of somebody to put the ball in the net, with Nicolas Jackson providing his own miss-of-the-season contender. Forest had executed Steve Cooper’s astute plan to perfection, defending with discipline before striking on the break, Elanga’s first goal for the club a timely boost after Brennan Johnson’s move to Tottenham. Chelsea, who had made great play about their summer signings having an average age of 20.5 years, looked callow by comparison.
In the end Chelsea ran out ideas, even after Palmer, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk were among those also chucked at the problem, and the final whistle was greeted with boos. Just one league win, two defeats and one draw from their opening four league games would not have been the return expected following the latest stage of Chelsea’s expensive overhaul.
But in football, sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same. Yet Chelsea look no different to the rudderless bunch that thrashed around in disarray under Pochettino’s predecessor Graham Potter.
