Over 7,000 seabirds have died this year alone, with disease hitting more sites, but there is progress on the Farne Islands
Despite the wider range of the disease, techniques to slow the spread may be working. The Farne Islands suffered more than 6,000 deaths in 2022, but this year the figure is 3,647.
Nevertheless, it and other wildlife organisations such as the RSPB remain deeply concerned about the continued spread of avian flu. “Currently there is little solid guidance and we’re fighting against time to prevent a long-term impact on some populations, particularly those species which are already struggling due to other pressures such as climate change – like the Arctic tern, and those seabirds such as Puffins which only lay one egg and fledge one chick per year,” she added.
It’s not yet clear why, but Ms Reid suggested it could be that immunity was building in previously affected species.
