The UK's biggest conservation charity, which represents 5.7 million members, challenges Labour and the Tories to 'stop our rivers being used as open sewers'
Labour has vowed to put water companies on “special measures” if it comes into power, which will involve blocking the payment of bonuses and bringing criminal charges against executives who pollute waterways. It will also impose automatic and severe fines for wrongdoing.
Water companies have paid their investors healthy dividends while failing to invest enough in their infrastructure to prevent environmental harm. This is partly caused by a disjointed regulatory system that prioritises economic outcomes over the environment.Within its first year in power, the next Government will publish a plan to reform regulation of water companies. This plan must be legislated on and executed within the first term of Parliament.
The UK is currently not on track to meet its legally binding target for 77 per cent of rivers to have a good ecological status by 2027.is calling on the next Government to publish a detailed roadmap within its first six months in power on how this legally binding target will be met, including how the Environment Agency will be better funded to enforce environmental laws.
But three out of four people are set to avoid going for a swim this year amid fears over raw sewage, according to a recent YouGov poll. Fewer than one in 20 say they are very likely to enter British waters. Beaches on our land in Portstewart and Castlerock in Northern Ireland were ‘red-flagged’ as unsafe for bathing last summer thanks to toxic blue-green algae from the River Bann.
We know water is an issue of huge concern to the general public. That includes the vast majority of our membership, who care deeply about the environment.’s Save Britain’s Rivers 2024 manifesto and its call for all political parties to sign up to it in full.
