The Nature Conservancy, an international environmental nonprofit, is planning to conduct prescribed burns this fall and spring at several East Chicago, Hammond and Gary sites, the organization announced in a Monday news release.
TNC will burn grasses, small flowering plants and leaves to prevent the growth of woody shrubs and trees and safeguard the region’s oak savanna habitat, a type of ecosystem once widespread in the Midwest but now rare and threatened. Fires also reduce the buildup of biomass on the ground, which can smother native prairie species, and reduce the likelihood of an out-of-control wildfire.
5-acre parcel north of the Grand Calumet River and west of Cline Avenue are scheduled for a burn. Of the three areas, the East Chicago tract is the only one not owned by TNC. The property is owned by East Chicago Gateway Partners, who granted a conservation easement to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, who in turn entered into an agreement with TNC allowing the organization to manage it.
