To tank or not to tank? That is the question. Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league office would be watching closely for any and all signs of intentional losing this season. Did his warning scare everyone straight? Well, maybe not quite.
“It’s such a long season. A lot of people that run and operate teams understand the risk of not winning games, as far as what it does to the fabric of your organization or your team. They do value teaching the right habits and making sure they’re putting their best foot forward and trying to win games, so I think that’s why you’re seeing teams perform better than what we thought coming out.
“I think when Adam came out and made those statements about tanking, people basically decided they’ll fake it, right? We can fake it for a little bit, and it’s not going to hurt us. Wins early on aren’t going to hurt you. Listen, it’s gonna come. Look at OKC last year. They were good early on, and then they made sure that they were where they needed to be. That’s just reality. I think the teams that want to tank will be there.
