The payment pause on federal student loans, without interest, has been extended through January 21, 2022. The extension also prohibits wage garnishment on defaulted loans. If you’re one of the nearly 11,000 borrowers still waiting on a refund for illegally garnished wages during the pandemic, there’s not much you can do. The Department of Education may have attempted to contact you to gather updated information, such as your address. Keep an eye out in the mail for any official correspondence, and act accordingly.
If your student loans will still be in default once the forbearance period ends early next year, the best step to take is to call your student loan servicer and discuss your options to pull your loans out of default.
