Districts on San Antonio's East and South sides could be some of the first to benefit from the effort to improve internet service

San Antonio and Bexar County leaders are working with AT&T and Spectrum, respectively, to get reliable internet to people struggling with inadequate or no service. Almost 30,000 single- and multi-family homes and businesses could benefit if approved in the coming months.

“I think this is an absolute game-changer for our city,” District 6 Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda said. “It puts tools in the hands of those who have been left out of the digital economy — of course, we’ve got to talk about our small businesses — tools in the hands of our students who have been left behind, especially in the last couple of years.”

The county may end up working with Spectrum to provide better service to 8,761 locations, likely with fiber. County spokesperson Monica Ramos said next month Commissioners Court would decide whether or not to start negotiating with Spectrum. Spectrum has said it will put $26 million toward the effort if the county puts in $5.4 million.

Dillard said lower-income areas are not as profitable to internet companies, but when a local government agrees to pay into a project, that can get internet providers interested in improving service.
