The Englishman responded to criticism after the narrow win over Motherwell as he eyes a place at Hampden.
Neil Banfield insists Rangers have already shown they have big performances in them with their displays against Real Betis and PSV Eindhoven as Michael Beale’s assistant expects to hear the sound of cheers rather than jeers at Ibrox on Wednesday.
Banfield wasn’t as critical as he insists the current squad are their own harshest critics, and he pointed to a couple of displays in Europe as the potential for this side as supporters desperately wait for it to click into gear.
“Looking at the game there are certain aspects you think we could take our opportunities better but when you look at our three clean sheets and the way the team defends, the structure of the team and the way we are playing at times it’s definitely coming and that only bodes well for the future. “Motherwell set up really well and we showed some good passages of play. It’s hard to play against a defensive block and you have to be patient and we showed that in our combination play at certain times in the attacking third. It hasn’t finished with a goal but that will come in the end.
