Nene Macdonald's Leeds Rhinos future appears in doubt after Rohan Smith confirmed he was awaiting an update on the centre's current status. Macdonald was due to return to the Rhinos side today after being granted a leave of absence to attend the birth of his child.
However, he has not returned to the country as was anticipated, resulting in him not featuring in the victory over Hull FC. Macdonald had been named in the provisional 21-man squad on Thursday, however, Smith appeared in the dark regarding the whereabouts of his centre when questioned on his status at the MKM Stadium.
The club released a statement on Friday night confirming Macdoanld would not play, and when Smith was asked about the Papua New Guinea international, he implied that he was unsure about his plans and when, or if, he would return. "I'm awaiting an update on that one," Smith said when asked about Macdonald's status. When asked when he knew Macdonald wouldn't be available, he added: "It would have been some stage Thursday.""I'm awaiting more details on that one but yes, he was expected to be back in time to play."
Macdonald only recently signed a new long-term deal with the Rhinos but when Smith was asked if developments could have an impact on his long-term future, he added: "I'm awaiting more details on that one so I think we'll just leave it there for now."
