I'm not sure I learned anything new about the lives of orangutans, secret or otherwise, and has narrated several documentaries for the streamer since, it still feels weird to hear him narrate a film that’s not on the BBC, for whom he’s been making natural history programmes since the 1950s. A community of some 200 identifiable individuals has been under observation for 30 years by scientists and Attenborough introduces us to several of them. Friska is a mother of six and, at over 60 years old, one of the oldest orangutans in the wild.
But it’s apparently not enough to just watch these charming apes going about their business – eating, territorial squabbles, finding mates, power struggles and more eating . Modern natural history documentaries need to have a storyline; an unfolding drama that too often feels shaped by the film-makers.
We’re supposed to think she is devastated at being supplanted in her mother’s affections by the new arrival. But that’s simply one interpretation of just a handful of shots. How do we know she’s not delighted to finally be free of her overbearing mother? How do we know she has any feelings about it at all? After all, as Attenborough says at the start of the film: “We may never know exactly what they are thinking.”is entertaining enough and sometimes funny .
