The Rockets could aspire for better times ahead when they could hope that getting a Nets pick in 2024 and 2026, or an option to swap picks in 2025 would be worth more than it is now. But as they faced the Nets on Wednesday, there was a reminder that just as the Nets’ accumulation of superstars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Harden did not guarantee championship contention, neither has the end of that brief era triggered a spiral to the bottom.
Bridges, Dinwiddie and Johnson have already played more games together than the 16 that Harden, Irving and Durant played together with the Nets. But as with all things about the Nets, from the brief Big Three experiment to the latest Pretty Good Three team, how that will play out remains uncertain, not just through the Nets’ draft commitment to the Rockets, but even from game to game.
The inconsistency could be an inevitable consequence of a midseason overhaul. The players acquired in the Irving and Durant trades all start along with defensive center Nic Claxton. It could be reasonably expected to take time to develop the cohesiveness to be more consistent. Making that many midseason changes brings challenges, regardless of who is acquired.
