While red states are doubling down, blue states are focusing their efforts to expand abortion access across the U.S. as abortion opponents are poised for a likely victory at the U.S. Supreme Court early this summer. The court is expected to issue a decision in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health, a Mississippi case that could overturn the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide., Maryland and some other states are working to dramatically expand access to abortion.
Maryland’s bill establishes an abortion care training program with $3.5 million in state funding annually beginning in 2024. The bill awaits a signature from Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, and if enacted would go into effect July 1. Many expect the bill to be vetoed by Hogan. But Democrats are confident the bill will become law anyway because they have veto-proof majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly.on Wednesday: “Thanks to visionary leadership Sen Delores Kelley and I passed the strongest bill in the country to ensure ALL WOMEN have access to the full range reproductive services.”codifies the right to an abortion, which some opponents suggest could include the right to terminate after childbirth.
The bill states that a fertilized egg, embryo or fetus does not have “rights under the laws of this state.”
