Although he was already a member of the Aurora City Council, Ald. Brandon Tolliver was sworn in publicly as the 7th Ward alderman on Tuesday night.
Tolliver had been sworn in two weeks ago privately, and has participated as a council member in several meetings. But this week, he got the public treatment other aldermen get after a traditional election, with 16th Circuit Court Associate Judge Reginald Campbell swearing him in before a group of more than 250 family, friends, colleagues and supporters at Belle Salle Banquets on East New York Street.
“The importance of tonight is not lost on me,” said Tolliver. “I only stand here tonight because of the passing of a titan, but I promise to stand strong in her honor and carry her torch as we keep the ward moving forward.” Born and raised in Aurora, Tolliver is a graduate of West Aurora High School. He credits his love for public service to the many Aurora-based youth groups he participated in as a teenager, including the Boys II Men mentoring program and the Voices for Excellence community youth choir.
