exhibit made its debut at the Cleveland Museum of Art on Friday with an opening-night gala that gave guests a chance to show off their own style.
The exhibition, opening Sunday, examines Black fashion photography and design in the U.S., Europe, and Africa. Guests on Friday were invited to “dress in creative fashion ensembles.’’ Entertainment included sets by DJ Fabrizio and Gumbo Dance Party. The museum said its opening party was a sellout. Organized by New York-based critic and curator Antwaun Sargent, the show focuses on the work of 15 widely-published photographers, plus another 23 emerging talents.
The show places equal emphasis on the work of designers and stylists who helped co-create the “looks” on view. On view through Sunday, Sept. 11, “New Black Vanguard’' represents an effort by the museum to broaden its audience and to begin exploring fashion as a mode of creative visual expression on par with the traditional media it has collected since it opened in 1916.cma.orgNote to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
