Parliament is due to rise for the summer recess on July 23.

Conservative MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns has asked the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Mel Stride, if he will “bring forward proposals for a compensation scheme by 23 July 2024” for women impacted by changes to their State Pension age. The written question follows on from several calls from MPs last week to put a timetable or mechanism in place for delivering compensation to all women born in the 1950s affected by the rise in retirement age before the summer break.

There could also be questions on issues that the Committee has recently contacted the DWP about, including what the Department is doing to address the problem of Carer’s Allowance overpayments and the UK Government’s response to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s report on women’s State Pension age changes.

In the letter, the Labour MP urged the UK Government to “bring forward proposals for a remedy by the summer recess.”The letter states: “As you are aware, the PHSO laid its report before Parliament on March 21 2024, asking Parliament to ‘identify an appropriate mechanism for providing remedy’ for women born in the 1950s who have suffered injustice because of DWP’s maladministration in its communication of increases in their State Pension Age legislated for in the Pensions Act 1995.

Latest State Pension News Sir Stephen continued: “The evidence we received indicated support for a rules-based system. This would be a system where payments would be adjusted within a range to reflect the extent of change in the individual’s state pension age and the notice of the change which the individual received.

The letter highlighted evidence from Angela Madden, chairwoman of the WASPI Campaign. She previously told the Committee that women’s divorce settlements had been based on a pension age of 60, meaning they had been awarded less money. “There is no perfect solution, but there would seem to be broad support for a rules-based system of compensation with a degree of flexibility for cases where women have experienced direct financial loss.
