Having a baby can be quite costly, especially in the current cost-of-living crisis. Every extra penny is crucial and new mums can claim a one-off £500 to help with the cost of having a newborn through a lesser-known government scheme.
For instance, if you already have children under 16 and you're now expecting twins or triplets, you could be looking at a £1,000 grant. Or if you have existing children but you're now caring for a family member's baby, you might also qualify. However, quick action is needed - claims for the grant can only be made within 11 weeks of your baby's expected due date, or within 6 months post-birth. Unfortunately, as a rule, it's not available if you already have children under 16, with exceptions for multiples or those caring for another person's child.
After the entire form has been completed, it can be posted to "Freepost DWP SSMG" or handed in at the local Jobcentre Plus branch. Following this, all that remains is to patiently await a letter notifying you on the outcome of your claim.
