Exercise Tiger, a top-secret dress rehearsal for the D-Day landings held 80 years ago, ended in the loss of nearly 750 American lives

Due to a series of miscommunications and errors which befell Exercise Tiger, it is now thought that about 110 personnel were killed on the beach, with even more wounded. The cloud concealed the after-effects of a Royal Navy bombardment which had been due to be laid down an hour ahead of the landings as part of instructions that the D-Day training exercises should mimic as closely as possible the conditions that the American assault troops from the 4General Dwight D Eisenhower, the supreme commander of Allied forces and, as such, the kingpin of D-Day planning, had ordered...
But, tragically, other smaller landing craft involved in the exercise were operating on different radio frequencies and failed to receive the new orders, instead proceeding according to the original instructions. Earlier this month Mr Cranmer’s research led to the unveiling of the first memorial to be dedicated solely to the men who lost their lives in the friendly fire incident in the form of a stone cairn placed at Strete Gate – the point closest to the location of Red beach.
Mr Cranmer said: “What is clear is that these men reaching the beach were confronted with a terrible situation, something very different from what they should have done. They managed to make radio contact from the beach to get the shelling stopped. But by then it was too late – the damage had been done.”
Historians now dismiss this, pointing out that both the friendly fire incident and the torpedo boat attack were detailed in official American reports produced shortly after the end of the war which were then forgotten.
