Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra to receive a significant camera upgrade.
According to a Samsung representative in the official, the next Galaxy S23 update will add a new dedicated 2x zoom option to the camera’s portrait mode. The post comes in response to a user bemoaning the fact that pictures taken at 2x look worse than cropping in on a photo shot at 1x zoom in high-resolution mode.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with dual 3x and 10x telephoto lenses, offering excellent performance at longer ranges, but this leaves a ‘hole’ between 1x and 3x where quality is negatively impacted. You can see the results of this in Dxomark’s Galaxy S23 UltraUnfortunately for Samsung, people really like the look of portraits shot at around 2x zoom which means they’re frequently getting sub-standard image quality.
A 2x zoom option was also recently added by Chinese rival OPPO in its chart-leading Find X6 Pro flagship , which suffered from a similar gap in close-range zoom capability. It’s clearly a feature that smartphone manufacturers will need to pay more attention to in the future — while it makes sense that the best image quality will be available at zoom levels that match the included telephoto lenses, users really shouldn’t have to think about this.
