Councils are being told to ‘repurpose’ existing town boards which handle government-funded regeneration schemes
A new Nelson town board is to be created in Pendle this week, in response to a new wave of proposed government-backed town plans across the country.
CONCERNS OVER ‘FEW COUNCILLORS’ Concerns were raised in February by one senior Pendle councillor about the potentially low number of democratically-elected councillors on the new body. Government guidance says the number of elected councillors should be limited to promote community leadership and council representation, according to a council report.
It was a Lib-Dem councillor, David Whipp, also the deputy leader of Pendle Council and a member of the first Nelson Town Deal Board, who recently raised concerns about the potentially low number of councillors on the new board. Community and religious representatives could include Christine Blythe, of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale CVS; Rauf Bashir from Building Bridges, Claire Bennett of Positive Action in the Community; and Imam Afaq Khan from Nelson Community Masjid. There is a space for an arts, culture, heritage or sport representative.
