Works by women and artists of color sparked the most interest, while a Cy Twombly painting fetched nearly US$20 million

An untitled work from Cy Twombly’s Bacchus series sold for nearly US$20 million with fees and a 1981 painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold for nearly US$12 million at Christie’s 21st-century art sale on Tuesday evening in New York.

The Twombly and the Basquiat may have been the headline works, but the results for each were on the low end of expectations and were achieved shortly after the opening bids. Both works were guaranteed, with the Basquiat partially or fully backed by a third party. Heinze’s Third Date, 2020, a 6-foot-tall figurative-abstract oil-and-acrylic that Christie’s described as “a poignant and humorous visual of the post-pandemic psyche,” sold for US$190,000, before fees, more than double a high estimate; Gribbon’s Regarding Me Regarding You and Me, 2020, sold for US$380,000, before fees, also more than double a high estimate and an auction record for the artist.

The evening sale was the first of several major auctions in New York this week and next that is being closely watched for signs of the art market’s overall strength, and the strength of sectors within it.
