The New York City health department has declared a public health emergency in response to the monkeypox outbreak. As alecia__reid reports, this comes as there are still questions about vaccine availability in the city.
Mayor Eric Adams and health commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan released the following statement Saturday:
"Today, we are declaring monkeypox a public health emergency in New York City. Over the past few weeks, we have moved as quickly as possible to expand outreach and access to vaccines and treatment to keep people safe.
"New York City is currently the epicenter of the outbreak, and we estimate that approximately 150,000 New Yorkers may currently be at risk for monkeypox exposure. We will continue to work with our federal partners to secure more doses as soon as they become available. This outbreak must be met with urgency, action, and resources, both nationally and globally, and this declaration of a public health emergency reflects the seriousness of the moment."vaccine availability in the city.
More than 25 percent of the nation's cases are here in New York, and the hope is that additional vaccines will get here sooner rather than later.
