There are fewer more fascinating players in the game today than Barzal. He has franchise-tier talent, but only top-line-tier results.
“I just can’t believe he doesn’t get more out of his skill set. That player, to me, is confusing,” one coach said. “Those guys need to find a way no matter who they’re with. If you’re a true center in your prime, you should be able to.” Since scoring 85 points in his rookie season Barzal has struggled to match that high, pacing between 66 to 72 points in each of the last four seasons. Yes, Barzal is great at bringing the puck up ice and passing it — but if he hasn’t put the puck in the net at an elite rate for four straight seasons, how much does it matter? Last year Barzal was second in controlled entries, but below league average in turning them into scoring chances.
“Maybe it’s the part, where he can’t figure out how to maximize what he has,” the coach said. “If that’s the case, he’s slotted where he actually should be.”“If you want to make the case for guys not having help, it just has to be him. He plays with absolutely nothing in a nothing system,” one analyst said. “He is a pure playmaker and I think that’s where he gets hurt by not playing with better guys.
With more help up front, hopefully a return to point-per-game status — a first since his rookie year.
