Not surprised here. The “upstart squad that couldn’t quite handle its first taste of playoff hockey” is an archetype for a reason. I’m not so sure the Rangers have figured out the right mix at forward, though.This is the only first-round series where the majority of voters chose the betting underdog. It’s also the closest series according to the oddsmakers, with New Jersey minus-125 to win it and the Rangers plus-105.
So it makes sense that the Rangers will get a good share of votes. It’s just a big bet on the Rangers being able to keep pace with the Devils’ speed in this series. But the Shesterkin factor is real.If the Devils set the pace in this series, the Rangers could be in tough. According to Steve Valiquette from Clear Sight Analytics, the Devils lead the league in transition rush plays, while the Rangers are more middle of the pack. If this turns into a track meet, the Devils should fare pretty well.
