🔴 NHS staff shortages most common reason for operations being cancelled in England, figures show ➡️ Around 158,000 operations were cancelled for non-clinical reasons in 2021/22
shortages were to blame for the cancellation of an estimated 30,000 operations last year in England, analysis of figures from NHS hospitals suggests.reveals insufficient staffing was the most common non-clinical reason given for a procedure not going ahead – accounting for one in five of all operations cancelled.
Of these, an estimated 10,000 were urgent, 8,000 were for children and 2,500 were for cancer patients. This represents a doubling in the number of cancelled procedures since 2018/19, when 79,000 were recorded. During the same period, the number of operations cancelled due to staff shortages has trebled.
The FOI responses showed that the second most common reason for operations being cancelled was because theatre lists overran, followed by a shortage of beds, admin errors, and because an emergency case took priority. Current vacancy levels across the NHS are at a five-year high, with health professionals warning of a deepening workforce crisis.
