The Crimson Tide, down 7-6, were driving the ball into Ole Miss territory. At the Rebel 16, facing second-and-five, Roydell Williams carried the ball exactly five yards. However, the chains had moved. The play was first-and-10, so Alabama had essentially wasted a down before facing second-and-9. Saban said the referee told him he had signaled for the first down. Saban questioned why the official spotting the ball didn’t.
