Her work is carnal, polemical and deliberately shocking, but this supremely skillful and thoughtful artist never takes herself too seriously
Nicole Eisenman offers a world of distinctly adult pleasures. Emerging onto the New York scene in her twenties, the painter tested the limits. How much was too much? A group of adult women in a Trevi Fountain-like arrangement of twisting, urinating bodies who pass their pee out to be sold on a kid’s lemonade stand? A separatist community of arctic lesbians using a man as fishing bait? A birthing scene involving a hanged woman?opens with this in-your-face 90s work, and it’s… a lot.
In the mid 2000s Eisenman commenced a series of “history paintings” engaging with social and political phenomena of her time. Painted during the subprime mortgage crisis, in a procession of grotesque and harried figures cluster around a doorless and stationary car while a clapboard house in the background belches smoke. Eisenman portrays the Brooklyn art world gathered in beer gardens or for political protests: crowd scenes populated by the artist, her friends and community.
