Red Hood's return as a killer was a devastating reveal for the Bat-Family, but it turns out Nightwing had killed someone long before Red Hood.

While may comics fans see Red Hood as the most violent killer in the Bat-Family, Nightwing committed murder long before Jason did. When Jason Todd came back from the dead as Red Hood, what should've been a momentous occasion turned into a tragedy when it was revealed that he had become a killer, going against everything the Bat-Family stands for.

One of the most significant rules of being a member of the Bat-Family is no killing, followed by no using guns, and Jason Todd has broken both of these rules. When Jason came back to life after being killed by the Joker, he took on the moniker of Red Hood and began killing criminals. This naturally put him at odds with Batman and the rest of his family, and Jason has never really managed to get past that.

While one could argue that Nightwing killing the Gorgon is in total self-defense, and not even his fault since he is just reacting to Donna crying for help, the same isn't true of when Nightwing kills the Joker. In the first example, Nightwing is trying to save a friend, and he isn't even aware of what he's done until afterward. The situation with the Joker is much different.

Nightwing Brutally Beat Joker To Death It could be argued that Nightwing is technically absolved of Joker's murder by the fact that the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't go towards the light he sees. Instead, he is revived with the entire Bat-Family standing around him. Dick still feels like a murderer, admitting that he was happy when he believed Joker to be dead.
