Former Russian F1 driver Nikita Mazepin has started preparations for a 2024 return, taking Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly to court to have sanctions against him removed.Mazepin, who drove for the Haas F1 Team in the 2021 season, is claiming that the sanctions have severely impacted his racing career.
“It will be extremely difficult — if not impossible — for him to be recruited again as an F1 driver or as a driver in other motorsport championships.” Mazepin last raced in F1 two years ago, in which he endured a disappointing season with the Haas F1 Team. The Russian driver scored no points for the American outfit and was dropped prior to the start of the 2022 season.Mazepin’s F1 contract was terminated prematurely in March 2022 due to his links with the Russian government at the advent of the Russo-Ukrainian War.
