This will be the 23rd year of an organized pilgrimage from Chicago to Des Plaines, which Des Plaines officials have said attracts more than 200,000 people every year.

The feast day commemorates the day the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Juan Diego in Mexico in December 1531. The shrine in Des Plaines is home to a replica of the sacred cloak on which the apparition is said to have taken place. The Rev. Zeke Sanchez said at a Dec. 1 press conference that last year’s celebration, the first since the pandemic broke out, attracted thousands of pilgrims.
“I think it has much more to do with a need for solidarity and a need for community and a need to move away from a time of isolation,” Sanchez said of why the shrine attracts so many people for the feast day and accompanying celebrations. Zakula added that the department would staff the shifts covering the period where pilgrims would be walking with extra officers, though the village does not plan to close any roads.
