Is it a drama? A comedy? Or, perhaps, a mystery? Jonathan Levine, the director behind NinePerfectStrangers, has invented a new genre to describe his show: psychedelic soap opera.
You can listen to the entire episode here, or read an excerpt from it below.“I have had the opportunity to direct a lot of people pretending to be on drugs,” Levine explains. “I like to consider myself like an expert in this one particular area of directing.
Levine has a few rules about directing his actors into altered states. “I do not want anyone to be playing messed up,” he says. “[That can be] kind of deadly when you’re playing people on drugs. It’s not like[where people] are just freaking out…. Everyone landed their own subtle behavior, um, on the drugs. Forit was another…a lot of it can also be dictated in the edits.”
Outside of the work with his actors, Levine leaned on some tried-and-true camera methods to give episode three, specifically, a tripped-out vibe. “Not just camera movement, but composition and lens choice,” he says, “start to indicate that something’s getting a little more messed up. We were using some Dutch angles, we were using a little bit of drifting in and out. That’s another tool in the tool kit: subtlety with camera.
All that means is that a story involving experimental therapeutic methods and an odd cocktail of personalities is on track to spin completely out of control, thanks to the chaotic ingredient Masha has added to the mix. All of those elements come pretty directly from author
